The latest “innovation” for air travel are Standing Seats — photos of which have been doing the rounds on social media recently.
Apparently, this is the new and creative way airlines have begun exploring that they claim will lower costs and improve efficiency, especially for short flight routes (under an hour) — more passengers and more revenue from a single flight, thus cheaper tickets.
It is being touted as the next big thing for the aviation industry that is struggling with high expenses and low profits.
Personally I will never opt for this.
As a traveller, I am already feeling the fatigue of air travel because we have to report 2 hours ahead of flights, commuting to the airport itself takes about an hour in most cities and the commute from the airport after arrival is also about an hour.
That’s 4 hours of discomfort without the actual flying time, at a minimum.
Add to that the fact that sometimes airports are so crowded that we don’t get seats on airports while we wait for boarding.
As a 50+ traveller, all this adds to the fatigue of air travel.
Perhaps younger people may opt for the option of standing on a flight, but most people I know, in my peer group, are seeking more comfort — XL seats, premium economy or business class where available, and lounge access.
