Experiencing Wildlife In Coorg

Coorg’s vast coffee plantations may be a sight to behold, but if you dig a little deeper, the region’s wildlife will leave you enthralled and fascinated. The lush, evergreen forests of Coorg are home to a variety of flora and fauna, some of which are rarely found anywhere else in the world. If you are planning a short trip to Coorg, make sure you don’t miss out on this experience.

Where to see wildlife in Coorg?

This is the part that needs a bit of planning. There are plenty of opportunities to see wildlife in the Coorg region but you need to know where to find what species. There are 3 wildlife sanctuaries and 1 major national park in this region which means that your options are many. Each of these sanctuaries and parks are known for the species they are home to and that should help you narrow down your choices.

If you are a fan of the mighty Asiatic elephants or tigers, head to the Nagarhole or Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Spread over an area of over 600 square kilometers, this national park is best known for running the famous wildlife conservation schemes – Project Elephant and Project Tiger. So it is not surprising to find herds of elephants in these forests, along with other animals like tigers, leopards and many species of deer. In addition to that, it is fairly common to come across beautiful birds in this national park, so bird lovers need not feel disappointed either!

If you want to combine your passion for trekking with wildlife spotting, head to the Brahmagiri sanctuary in Coorg. You may not get the safari experience here like you will at the Nagarhole national park, but that is compensated by the opportunities to hike. The most popular trail in this region is the trek up to the Brahmagiri peak, which allows you to come in close contact with precious animals like Sloth Bear, Jungle Cats, Deer and lots of birds like the Emerald Dove. As a bonus, this hike will also let you get to the beautiful Iruppu waterfalls.

If bird watching is your forte, then Pushpagiri wildlife sanctuary in Coorg is the place to be at. Rare birds like the Grey-breasted Laughing Thrush and Nilgiri Flycatchers can be found here. This sanctuary can be explored either by driving through it or by planning a hike to climb the Pushpagiri peak. Either way, it is an experience like no other!

Another exciting place to encounter wildlife is the Dubare Elephant Camp. As the name suggests, this camp gives you an opportunity not only to see elephants, but also interact with them under the expert guidance of a naturalist. The camp aims at educating visitors about elephants and in turn contributing to the preservation of the species.

A trip to Coorg will remain incomplete without experiencing wildlife at least at some of these places, if not all! It will not only leave you fascinated, but it is bound to open up your eyes to the issues of wildlife conservation and its importance.
