Ladakh, the Land of High Passes, is one of the most beautiful parts of India – not just because it is a cold desert, but also for its culture. The altitude of Leh, the capital of Ladakh, is 3300 metres above sea level and acclimatising to this altitude will take one full day.
We have put this very offbeat and unique itinerary together, which will offer you the chance to soak in the stunning beauty of the landscape of the region and enjoy a bit of the cultural experience. This is as slow travel as a trip to Ladakh can be.
The properties we have chosen are also offbeat and not available on mere searches on the internet.
The trip includes a guide to accompany you for the duration of the trip to enhance the experience even more.
ITINERARY
Day 1:– Land at Leh airport, as per flight schedule.
Our Services Begin
– You’ll be welcomed by your guide and transferred to the hotel located about 8 kms from Leh city in a village called Saboo. The day today will be spent lying in bed, sleeping as much as possible, and eating delicious food, to allow your body to acclimatise to the altitude. This is very essential to avoid Acute Mountain Sickness.
– Overnight in hotel.
Day 2:– After a leisurely breakfast, you will drive towards Thiksey Monastery, located about 12 kms away. We won’t visit the monastery as it requires climbing many steps, but visit the Learning Centre instead. Your guide will explain the importance of this monastery and a little bit of Ladkah’s history as well.
– We’ll organise a picnic lunch by the stunning Indus river, where you can relax and soak in the beauty of the river that shaped our civilisation.
– You can also visit Rancho School, belonging to Sonam Wangchuk, made famous by the movie 3 Idiots. His character was played by Aamir Khan.
– Return to hotel. Evening at leisure. Overnight in hotel.
Day 3:– After breakfast, we’ll drive you towards Nubra Valley. The drive will take about 4 hours.
– You will cross the highest motorable Pass in the world called Khardung La.
– Lunch would be a simple packed affair as there are no good restaurants enroute.
– Reach Nubra and check into your hotel. In the evening, visit the famous sand dunes in the region and watch the double humped camel.
– Overnight in hotel.
Day 4:– This is an open day – it can either be spent relaxing in the hotel and enjoying it’s environs, or we can drive you to the last village on the Indian side, Turtuk and beyond.
– We’ll organise a picnic lunch today as well.
– Evening at leisure. Overnight in hotel.
Day 5:– After breakfast, we’ll take you to the beautiful lake Yaya Tso, which has been declared Ladakh’s first biodiversity heritage site, as recently as February 2023.
– A visit to Sumur monastery and a village home will complete this tour.
– Evening at leisure. Overnight in hotel.
Day 6:– After breakfast, check out and head to Pangong Tso – the largest high altitude brackish water lake in the world – made famous again, by the movie 3 Idiots. This is a long drive along the stunning Shyok river. Drive time would be 7 hours.
– Lunch would be a simple packed affair as there are basic restaurants enroute.
– Reach the camp. Overnight in camp.
Day 7:– After viewing the stunning lake, have breakfast and head back to Leh.
– Reach the village Sakthi and check in.
– Evening at leisure. Overnight in hotel.
Day 8:– Departure day as per flight schedule.

1. The itinerary does not specifically include touristy sites of Ladakh and has been planned to give you a superlative, relaxing, offbeat experience in a touristy place. However, we can alter it to include the touristy sites should you so wish.
2. The camp in Pangong is what is called glamping. The Swiss tent has an attached bathroom. But since Pangong doesn’t have electricity, generators will be turned off by 9:00 PM. Solar powered lights will be given with hot water bags to tide over the cold. We’ve included it because covering this lake will mean you have covered a very popular site. If you’d like to give it a miss, we’ll alter the itinerary accordingly.
3. Best time to travel – April onwards till October end.
