Pangong Lake
Remember the movie ‘3 Idiots’? Aamir Khan’s character lives in Ladakh and Kareena Kapoor meets him at a pristine lake?
That lake is the Pangong Lake – the Highest Saltwater Lake in the World! It is located at an altitude of 4225 metres above sea level (13,860 feet)!
Only 40% of this 134 km long lake is in India. Rest of it is in China.
Since Ladakh is at a very high altitude, AMS is very common amongst visitors.
Symptoms include breathing trouble, with headaches, nose bleeds, stomach upsets etc.
Acclimatising is very essential and ideally, the first day must be spent resting in the room.
Should you get altitude sickness or AMS, you will have no further recourse but to abort the trip.
