Meghalaya is called the Abode in the Clouds — a State in the north eastern part of India with salubrious weather, lush greenery, perennial waterfalls, man made spectacles called the ‘Living Roots’ bridges, ancient caves with fossils and much more.
Meghalaya is an all year round destination, having very mild winters (no snowfall any where) and bearable summers. It is ideal for visit even in the rainy months (May-September).
But when clients want to know whats the best time to visit, we usually offer this disclaimer —
The best time is from October — March when the weather is at its best.
However, since all the waterfalls are perennial and rain-fed, their glory starts diminishing as the rains stop. From November onwards, the waterfalls start drying up and by March end, most of them are barely a trickle.
The ancient caves in Meghalaya fill up with rainwater and are inaccessible during the rainy months.
One of the most spectacular natural sites to visit in Meghalaya is the Umangot river with its crystal clear waters, but this river is muddy in the rains and starts to clear up by November and is splendid after December.
So our number one Travel Tip for Meghalaya is — If you want to see the countless waterfalls, visit in the rains; if you want to go boating on the Umangot, visit after November; and if you want to explore the stunning caves, visit after December.
Hope this helps you plan your getaway to Meghalaya!
