5 Things To Do In Coorg

Sometimes referred to as the “Scotland of India”, Coorg’s undulating green hills and the bright blue skies are easy to immerse yourself into! This Coorg region is very well known for its excellent coffee and natural bounty, but there are a number of other things that you can do during your time here.

Bathe with the elephants at the Dubare Elephant Camp

This is one of the most entertaining activities that you can choose to do in Coorg. There is a large herd of elephants who you can enjoy bathing, feeding and playing with. If you want, you could also speak to a local naturalist to learn about these gentle giants, their habitat and ways to protect them. The camp is located on the bank of the Kaveri River, and it is the perfect place to cool off in the heat of the summer.

Experience the Tibetan culture

Coorg is home to the only Tibetan settlement in Southern India. The Namdroling Monastery is the largest teaching centre for Tibetan Buddhism in the world and is home to almost 7000 monks. It is a beautiful experience to have as a family. Explore the Bylakuppe Tibetan settlement and the local Tibetan markets while you are here and get a chance to experience a unique culture.

Trek through the jungles and the hills

The lush Western Ghat hills running through Coorg which offers ample opportunities for trekking as well as hiking. Some of these treks take you to Brahmagiri, Kumara Parvatha, Kodachadro, Tadiandamol, and Mullayanagiri. Going for a trek here is ideal in the winter months when most of the forest is dry but is still green and flourishing.

Camp under the stars

In the past few years, camping has become very popular activity in Coorg and there are several campsites that you can choose from. If you decide to go camping in Coorg, make the most of it by soaking in the gorgeous natural surroundings and the clear night sky for a romantic stargazing session in the wild!

Apart from these five activities, there are a number of other things you should experience during your trip to Coorg. Rafting in the Barapole River, living the Coorgi lifestyle at a homestay, walking through a coffee plantation, and binging on local Pandi curry and Akki roti are just some of the unique experiences in Coorg for an authentic local experiences.
