Mattancherry Backwater Cruise

Mattancherry… To those who grew up in the viscera of Cochin (or Kochi as it is now known), the historical port town located in India’s beautiful tropical State, Kerala, Mattancherry was where nothing ever happened. Sleepy, laid-back, conservative…are some of the adjectives that would best describe this trading hub that lay in the western side of Cochin.

Ease India Travel explored the Mattancherry backwaters on a ferry hired through Hotel Fort House on a sultry November morning. As the sky cleared, we were able to capture the stunning beauty of the backwaters (“The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast (known as the Malabar Coast) of Kerala state”: Wikipedia), the churches and temples that dot the landscape, the famous Chinese Fishing nets and the crisscrossing water bodies.

Boats ferrying people from one island to another are the lifelines in this part of the world and it is in wonderment we saw how innovation helped man and machine reach their destinations…
