The Great Rann of Kutch. Spread across 7505 sq kms, it is the largest Salt desert in the world. Also known as the White Desert, a large part of it is located in India (and the other in Pakistan), the desert is inhabited by a tribe known popularly as the Kutchis.

This beautiful vagary of nature, the Rann (which simply means ‘desert’ in Hindi) is astounding in its pristine beauty; a sea of white that is expansive, calming, and soothing.

The starkness of the desert is in complete contrast with the vibrant colours the Kutchis adorn. Their homes are beautifully decorated and bear the colours of ‘life’. As a local tourist guide revealed to us, “We are colourful from the inside even though we live in a desert…”

We went on a short trip to this beautiful part of Gujarat and took photographs that depict the ethos of the Rann – a dry, arid land, occasionally bursting with the colours of ‘life’…
